There are a few smart wifi products in the market with Xfinity XFI, Eero and Circle with Disney. These products can let you block wifi connectivity to some devices based on a schedule. Well, that is not a sufficient way to manage kid's screen time.
Some key limitation of "smart" wifi systems:
- Games (Younger kids): they love to play games as you know. When wifi is disabled, they can continue to play games as if nothing happened. So that defeats the whole purpose of screen time management.
- Mobile data (Older kids): they can just turn off wifi and start using their (your) mobile data plan. How is that a good option?
- Out of the house (All kids): what happens when they are using the screen but at a friends place, at a coffee shop, at school. Wifi products can not protect your kids any one of those situations.
- Daily screen limit: This is the most effective way to teach kids responsible screen behavior and "smart" wifi products don't support accurate time counting and enforcement.
